The victim of a suspicious death last week at the Best Western has been identified by RCMP.

Police say the victim is 21-year-old Masi Qayumi of Surrey, B.C. and have confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a homicide.

Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP said police continue to investigate the incident which occurred last Friday, April 17.

“All leads are being pursued and the investigation is moving forward,” Beauregard said.

He added that Qayumi’s family has been notified of his death and an autopsy was conducted on Qayumi’s body Wednesday in Vancouver.

Police have yet to release a cause of death.

Qayumi’s body was discovered at the Best Western Austrian Chalet on the Old Island Highway by Campbell River RCMP after responding to a call at 7 a.m. last Friday.

The scene was quickly secured and cordoned off with police tape for two days.
