Just before 6 p.m. on Feb. 8, fire crews responded to a reported house fire in the 2700 block of Bradford Rd.
“When crews arrived they found the occupants evacuating the home and a fire in one bedroom on the second floor,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Vrabel. “A very quick response by fire crews that evening extinguished the fire before the smoke and flames had the opportunity to migrate beyond the single room.”
No injuries were reported, and damage was isolated to the single room.
“The homeowner was alerted to the fire problem after her smoke alarm activated on the lower floor,” adds Vrabel. “This is another example that working smoke alarms save lives and reduce property damage.”
The incident is considered non-suspicious, and an investigation to determine the cause of the fire is still underway.
Propane fridge catches fire
On the evening of Feb. 7, crews responded to a mobile home park in the 4000 block of South Island Hwy. for a reported propane fridge on fire.
On arrival crews discovered a propane fridge in a recreational vehicle had failed, causing minor damage to the internal components of the fridge.
“The vehicle owner did the right thing by exiting the vehicle, turning off the propane supply tanks and calling 911 for help,” Vrabel confirms.
Campbell River fire fighters remind the public to test smoke alarms and practice home fire safety drills and evacuation plans regularly.
