RCMP looking for public’s assistance in locating driver in hit and run

A cyclist was hit by a vehicle that left the scene on the corner of 9th Ave and Alder St. on Saturday evening.

“The cyclist was riding north on Alder St. when a truck turned left onto 9th Ave, striking the cyclist and throwing him off his bicycle,” Const. Sara Clark, media relations officer with the Campbell River RCMP, said. “The driver stopped momentarily, then fled the scene.” The cyclist was taken to hospital by ambulance and suffered minor injuries.

RCMP are asking for the public assistance in locating the suspect vehicle. It is believed to be a 2001-2005 Ford Ranger or B series with damage to the left front corner signal light area.

“With the shorter days and winter weather, drivers need to be constantly aware of their surroundings,” Clark said. “Living in the climate we do allows people to ride bicycles year round and many people do. RCMP strongly encourages riders to wear the extra safety gear like reflective vests and lights to ensure they are visible to drivers. Also we ask that drivers ensure diligence when scanning for cyclists and pedestrians especially during the fall and winter seasons.”

If anyone has any information on this collision and the suspect vehicle contact Campbell River RCMP at (250)286-6221 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
