One man dead, another seriously injured in head-on crash

Crash occurred just south of Campbell River Tuesday night; alcohol and speed may have been factors in the collision

A Campbell River man is dead following a head-on collision Tuesday night, just south of the city.

The name of the 59-year-old has not been released.

According to Campbell River RCMP, a Volvo sedan travelling south on the Island Highway crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound Honda shortly after 10 p.m.,

“The resulting collision was very severe and the driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard.

The accident occurred near Sailor Road, just north of Oyster Bay.

A 28-year-old Campbell River man was driving the Volvo and was also injured. He was transported to Campbell River Hospital and later transferred to hospital in Victoria where he’s listed in serious condition.

The highway was closed for several hours while a collision expert examined the scene. Police are also investigating whether alcohol and speed were contributing causes to the crash.

Further investigation of the scene is taking place today (Wednesday) and drivers may experience some delays.
