A Jeep SUV is pulled out of the ditch after a collision with a flatbed truck Monday that killed the passenger and required the driver to airlifted to hospital.

One man is dead and another was airlifted to hospital after their vehicle collided with a flatbed truck north of Campbell River Monday.

Highway 19 at Roberts Lake was closed for hours in both directions as the accident scene was examined and then cleared of debris. The engine of the victims’ vehicle, a Jeep SUV, came to rest in the middle of the highway.

Witnesses told CTV the Jeep was headed southbound around 12:56 p.m. when it was reported to have attempted to pass another vehicle and collided with the flatbed truck. The flatbed driver and a passenger were uninjured.

North Vancouver Island Traffic Services, with the assistance of Campbell River RCMP members and the Island District Analyst/Reconstructionist conducted the investigation of the scene, according to a North Vancouver Island Traffic Services press release.
