As temperatures plunge into the the “minus” category, the coldest night of the year could very well happen this weekend.
Officially though, Campbell River’s first-ever Coldest Night of the Year takes place on Saturday, Feb. 22.
“We need more exposure to get people rockin’ and pledging,” said punny-guy Paul Mason of Campbell River Family Services.
The Coldest Night of the Year is a Canada-wide fundraising effort to support those who are hungry and homeless.
Locally, Campbell River Family Services, Radiant Life Community Church and the Salvation Army are actively involved in providing shelter and meals for those in need.
On Feb. 22, Campbell River will be among 64 Canadian communities holding five-kilometre walks. The Canada-wide goal is to raise $2.5 million and Campbell River’s goal is $25,000.
As of Thursday, 17 local teams are registered and, so far, they’ve raised $2,860. Organizers are hoping more teams register so they can reach their goal.
“We know the community will come through as it always does,” said Camille Lagueux, executive director of Family Services.
The money will be much-needed next fall after funding runs out for this year’s all-weather, low-barrier shelter located beside the downtown firehall.
Currently, with the frigid temperatures, the 16-bed shelter has been full every night.
The registration fee for each walker is $25, but will be waived if you raise $125 in donations. Tax receipts will also be issued for all donations over $25.
Each walker will also receive a Coldest Night of the Year toque. The evening walk begins and ends at the downtown Community Centre where there will be Tim Hortons coffee and chili available.
