Three local firefighters received special recognition at Tuesday night’s council meeting for their long-term service.
Council set aside a few minutes to honour firefighters Michael Dumont, Bruce Holbrook, and Steve Ostler who reached 20 and 30 year respective milestones in their careers.
“We have the privilege tonight of honouring three of our firefighters for exemplary service,” Mayor Walter Jakeway said.
The federal medals were presented to each member individually by Campbell River Fire Chief Ian Baikie.
Baikie explained that the medals take into consideration each year spent in the field anywhere in Canada.
Dumont, who received his 20-year pin, began his career in Langford before moving to the Oyster River Fire Department and then finally setting in Campbell River in 1995 as a career firefighter.
Holbrook, also a 20-year award recipient, started out in White Rock in 1992 and moved to the Campbell River Fire Department in 1995.
Ostler was the last to be recognized and was honoured for putting in 30 years of service. Ostler joined the Campbell River volunteer department in 1982 and retired in December from the volunteer ranks.
“I am very grateful to present Steve with his 30-year medal,” Baikie said.
Firefighter Lee Pendergast was also slated to receive a 20-year medal but he was not in attendance at the council meeting.
The members who did attend received a framed plaque to go with their red and yellow striped medals.
