Laura Smith was acclaimed as Conservative candidate for North Island - Powell River this week.

Laura Smith will represent the Conservative Party of Canada as their candidate in North Island – Powell River in the 2015 federal election.

“I am proud to be running as a Conservative candidate because Stephen Harper is the strong, serious leader we need in our Prime Minister, and the only leader with a track record of strong economic leadership in uncertain times,” said Smith.   “Conservatives have consistently stood up for families, seniors and the middle class, while supporting the jobs and economic growth that keep our communities strong.”

Smith's acclamation as candidate was announced yesterday. Smith has worked as an advisor to Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan since 2008, an experience she says has been invaluable to understanding the incredible diversity of issues in the riding of North Island – Powell River, as well as how to be an advocate for coastal communities in Ottawa.

“I have seen good ideas arise from conversations with constituents right here in the riding, and eventually move on to be prominently displayed in the federal budget,” said Smith.  “Playing a part in moving such ideas forward is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my time in Ottawa, and the experience and knowledge I have gained is something I believe can benefit the people of North Island – Powell River.”

Prior to working in Ottawa, Smith worked in forest stewardship for 14 years after obtaining a Biology degree from the University of Victoria and taking further studies in forestry from the University of British Columbia. She has lived and worked in several Vancouver Island communities throughout her life, from logging camps to cities, and understands the unique benefits and challenges of living on the Coast.  She is also a passionate Search and Rescue volunteer, and a proud member of a local SAR team.

“People in North Island – Powell River want healthy and prosperous communities, sustainable jobs and respect for the places where we live and play,” said Smith. “I share these values and will fight for them in Ottawa.”
