Get creative at United Church summer camp

The focus will be on caring for creation and living peacefully

Campbell River United Church is offering a five-day summer camp for children from July 21 to July 25.

The focus will be on caring for creation and living peacefully. Each of the first four days will focus on a different aspect of creation: Forests, Land, Wilderness, and Rivers. These different parts of creation will be explored through stories, music, art, games, and craft activities.

Each morning will begin with a short opening worship and the days will end with a closing blessing and the gift of a symbol representing that day’s creation focus to take home. Some of the activities planned for the week include making nature mobiles and spirals, clay sculptures, walking sticks, writing poems to hang in trees, creating “land art” (using items from nature to create symbols and shapes, such as, a spiral made from stones or leaves) in local parks and at the beach, and outdoor games focusing on creation.

They will also create a “Peace Pole” with the inscription “May Peace Prevail on Earth” written in a different language on each of the four sides. This peace pole will be placed in the church grounds to join more than 250,000 Peace Poles that have been planted around the world since the first one was created in Japan in 1955.

The Creation and Peace Summer Day Camp is for children ages 5 to 12 years and runs from 9 am to 3 pm; snacks and lunch will be provided.  Registration fees are $10 per child for the week.
