The latest update from the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) suggests that fortunes are turning in the case of the weeklong fire five kilometres west of the village of Sayward.

The fire, which started May 29 and believed to be human caused, has been downgraded to yellow on the wildfire services stages of control rating, with red indicating “out of control.” A yellow designation indicates that the 208 hectare fire is being held.
“The wildfire is not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under these prevailing conditions,” said BCWS Information Officer Kimberly Kelly. “Fire crews are actioning suppression objectives on at least 80 per cent of the fire.”
The other 20 per cent of the fire is burning in extreme slopes and hazardous work conditions, and Kelly says that crews are looking for alternate strategies at containing the inferno.
“They are developing containment strategies,” said Kelly. “Contingency lines are also being planned.”
The crew has remained at 60 firefighters as well as a pair of medical helicopters, according to the BC Fire Service. The weeklong fire has had seen no evacuation order put in place, and no infrastructure is being threatened.
