A lunch hour fire on Parkway Road in Campbell River Dec. 9, has left a couple homeless just two weeks before the holiday season.

Witnesses on the street were alerted to the fire by several large explosion-like sounds.

“I just heard a loud bang,” said retiree Al Fiordecki, who was a couple houses down. “We came out and the garage and everything were just gone. The couple were evacuating as we showed up.”

Rory McCloud, who was two houses east of the fire, was notified of the fire by his uncle, who quickly got him out of the house and across the street.

“I had no idea,” said McCloud. “My uncle came banging hard on the door and said ‘Get out of here, now.”

Campbell River Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Kelly Bellefleur said the engine from Station No. 2 was the first to arrive to battle the horrendous flames, which started in the garage and quickly spread to the housing structure.

“There was an explosion,” said Bellefleur. “The homeowners heard the noise from their garage and were quickly evacuated.”

The couple were taken to Campbell River Hospital for assessment. Bellefleur maintained there were no injuries as crews continued to fight the fire to minimize the spread.

“We have around 25 firefighters here on duty,” said Bellefleur.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is still under investigation.
