Going to the dump will cost more in the new year.
At the regional solid waste board meeting on June 21, the Comox Strathcona waste managemen board approved a new fee structure for disposal of waste at the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres.
The board is currently considering increasing the tipping fees effective Jan. 1, 2013 to offset operational costs which cover not only the two waste management centers in Campbell River and Cumberland, but also the operations of the Tahsis and Zeballos landfills, Gold River transfer station and landfill, as well as the Cortes and Hornby Island transfer stations.
In addition to these facilities, tipping fees collected at the two waste management centres also fund the multi-bin recycling depot system, the compost education centres in Courtenay and Campbell River, waste reduction education and road maintenance.
“The board requested more information from staff on the minimum rate charge and load size for local residential customers for possible consideration at the September meeting,” said board manager Tom Boatman in a news release.
However, an increase was approved for municipal solid waste from $80 per metric tonne to $90 per metric tonne and construction demolition waste from $90 per metric tonne to $100 per metric tonne.
“These increases should allow for a balanced 2013 operating budget as well as allocate reserve funds for future capital projects,” Boatman added.
Future capital projects include improvements to gas collection, leachate collection, storm water facilities and for closure plans for existing landfills.
The fee structure categories offer diversion incentives to help preserve landfill capacity for the future and are consistent with the regional solid waste management plan.
