Long-serving Campbell River firefighter Ian Baikie has been appointed Fire Chief.

The City of Campbell River has announced the appointment of Ian Baikie as the new Fire Chief, effective immediately.

Chief Baikie has served the City of Campbell River as the acting Fire Chief since September 2012, following the resignation of former Fire Chief Dean Spry.

Baikie has a long and impressive history in the Campbell River fire service, serving as an auxiliary firefighter from 1985 until becoming a career firefighter in 1989. He was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief in 1997 and became Deputy Fire Chief in 2006.

In his new role, Chief Baikie will oversee all City fire operations, fire prevention and inspection as well as business administration, fire service delivery and the E-911 system that serves 49 regional fire halls.

“We’re very pleased to have Chief Baikie lead Campbell River’s fire department,” says City Manager Andy Laidlaw. “His impressive career experience and accomplishments will provide solid leadership to build an even stronger fire rescue team in support of public safety.

“I look forward to this new challenge, and I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead Campbell River’s exceptional team of professional and auxiliary firefighters in their commitment to providing world class emergency and fire prevention service to our community,” adds Chief Baikie.
