City mourns for two retired civil servants

George Paul was the acting city manager in Campbell River while Nelson Deck was director of engineering

Staff at city hall are mourning the loss of two former employees.

George Paul, the city’s acting manager from January 2010 to February 2011, died Tuesday following a battle with from pancreatic cancer.

“George came out of retirement to assist Campbell River...during a very difficult time,” said current city manager Andy Laidlaw in a news release. “Over 14 months, he put immense effort into re-building the city hall team that was working through extraordinary budget issues as well as staff shortages and numerous legal issues.”

On July 26, Nelson Deck, the city’s former director of engineering died here in Campbell River.

Deck worked in the engineering department from 1978-1993, pivotal years in the development of the future city.

His career highlights involved the construction of the current city hall building, Discovery Pier, the Norm Wood sewage treatment plant, Willow Point Park and Sportsplex. Deck also saw to the development and building of sewers to North Campbell River and Quinsam Heights.
