Canada Post may be moving the post office out of Tyee Plaza.
City council received a letter from the corporation May 21, explaining that Canada Post is considering relocating the post office to its delivery operations building on Ironwood Street which is next to Shar-Kare.
Tom Creech, communications officer for Canada Post, said the move would be a cost-saving measure.
“Canada Post has been faced with the challenge of rapidly declining mail volumes and revenues,” Creech wrote. “As such, Canada Post regularly reviews its network of retail locations and post offices to evaluate and improve operational requirements, enhance the customer experience, remain competitive and provide relevant postal service for all Canadians.”
Creech said that all of the services currently available at the post office in Tyee Plaza would continue to be offered at the Ironwood location.
“There would be no change to the business hours,” he wrote. “All existing postal box customers would retain their postal boxes at the new location, and there would be no change of address or postal code for postal box customers.”
Canada Post is also considering a quicker method of picking up parcels that end up at the depot.
The corporation is looking at giving postal box customers access to their parcels via secure parcel compartments inside the post office, similar to ones located in neighbourhood postal boxes, which would mean customers would not have to line up at the counter for their parcel.
Canada Post is asking for input from Campbell River residents until June 20 on the possible re-location. All postal box and rural route customers will receive information concerning the possible change if they have not already.
Creech said that if a decision is made to relocate, Canada Post will provide customers with at least 30 days notice.
“It is important for Canada Post to continue to change if we are to offer our customers relevant service and ensure the future of our company,” Creech wrote. “Our primary concern and responsibility is to ensure that we continue to provide the residents and businesses of Campbell River with reliable, affordable and accessible postal service.”
