School is back in session in Campbell River, so the RCMP released a news release to remind drivers that mark school zones apply from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

"Our friends with the local Citizens on Patrol will be out in force at multiple locations reminding people of speed limits in school zones," says Cst. Maury Tyre. "In addition, our officers will be conducting regular patrols in school zones looking for motorists who are putting children's lives at risk by speeding and using electronic devices while driving."

Roadways in Campbell River will also have an increase in bus traffic. Drivers cannot pass buses when their red lights are flashing, and stop signs are engaged.

"Speeds in school zones are set low to ensure that if a child was accidentally struck by a vehicle they would likely survive. Even a marginal increase of five kilometres per hour over the speed limit could mean that a pedestrian would not survive the encounter with a vehicle," reads the RCMP news release.
