Dry conditions, warmer weather and strong winds all contributed to a brush fire Monday evening.

The other factor was human error, likely a match or discarded cigarette that started the blaze shortly before 5 p.m., at the seven km marker of the Duncan Bay Logging Road, off Willis Road.

When the Campbell River Fire Department arrived, the fire covered a 10x20 metre area along the roadside and was spreading quickly.

“Strong winds were helping the fire grow, but the fire crews were able to contain the fire to an area approximately 100 feet by 40 feet,” said Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty in a news release.

It was believed to be the first brush fire of the year and residents are reminded to be cautious.

“The recent warm weather and drying trends could mean an early start to the wildfire season,” said Doherty. “(We) would like to remind the public to use caution with fire in the backcountry.”
