Joseph Galligos’ desire to stay out of jail had led him right back behind bars.
The 25-year-old Campbell River man has a long criminal record with convictions for assault, sexual interference, robbery, break and enter, obstruction and 28 counts of breaching court orders.
Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard called it an “atrocious record” for breaches and asked Judge Roderick Sutton for Galligos’ detention.
Galligos was in Campbell River provincial court for a Monday afternoon bail hearing after being arrested for not showing up to serve an intermittent jail sentence.
On March 10, Galligos received a 30-day sentence for another breach conviction. However, he got a break by being able to serve the sentence on weekends.
He was supposed to turn himself into the RCMP detachment on March 14, but didn’t show up. Police finally caught up with Galligos on March 22, when he was found drunk downtown.
At the time, Galligos was still on another bail order that doesn’t allow him to consume alcohol. He appeared in court March 24, and was ordered to serve his 30 days as straight time, plus another 15 days for breaching the no-alcohol provision.
He served that time in Victoria, was released April 22, and arrested again for another breach, this one for not showing up to serve the intermittent jail sentence.
Defence lawyer Sarah Runyon acknowledged Galligos’ “difficult record,” but asked for his release. She said he needs “something to do” when he’s out of jail other than hanging around with other friends with criminal records and drinking.
Galligos, she said, wants to enter an aboriginal training program, but it doesn’t begin until June.
Judge Sutton wasn’t convinced Galligos could keep on the “straight and narrow” and ordered his detention. His next court date is May 5.
