“When seniors help each other, they build a culture of respect and inclusion. It strengthens the community as a whole," says Pat Palmer, Berwick by the Sea's Active Living Manager. "A sense of community is at the heart of everything we do."
This year, the Campbell River seniors' community launched the Seniors Helping Seniors initiative, which quickly became a symbol of compassion and connection. The idea originated at the community’s annual volunteer luncheon when residents decided they wanted to give back to their fellow seniors.
"The initiative was inspired by a desire to combat isolation and foster peer support," Palmer says. “Our residents wanted to connect with one another and help those in need. Creating a culture where seniors help each other not only supports individuals but also strengthens the entire community.”
Through the Seniors Helping Seniors campaign, Berwick residents raised more than $3,000, which was donated to five local charities: MARS Wildlife Rescue, Qualayu House, the Campbell River Seniors Centre, Quadra Island Senior Housing Society and the Campbell River Food Bank – organizations chosen because of their positive impact on seniors and the broader community. Palmer adds.

Fundraising efforts focused on Berwick’s annual Christmas craft and bake sale. The Berwick resident community, including the knitting group, donated handmade items like toques, mitts, scarves and lap blankets. Meanwhile, Berwick's chefs baked a variety of goods, with all proceeds supporting the fundraising campaign.
“The participation from our residents was incredible,” Palmer says. “It was heartwarming to see so many of them contribute their time and talents to such a meaningful cause.”
For the residents, the initiative was about more than just donations – it was an opportunity to reconnect with each other and make a tangible difference in their community.
“The feedback we received was so rewarding," Palmer says. “It’s not just about the money we raised, but the emotional connections that were formed. Residents respond to giving back with a deep sense of fulfillment, connection and purpose. Many feel grateful for the opportunity to support their peers, recognizing the importance of community.”
The overwhelming success of the campaign has inspired the team to make it an annual tradition, with a continued focus on supporting the Campbell River Food Bank.
“The Food Bank has always been close to our hearts and we look forward to supporting it again next year. The goal of these donations is to create a lasting, positive impact on seniors and their communities by enhancing well-being, empowering peer support, fostering inclusion and strengthening community resilience," Palmer adds.
