As the winter months roll in, the joy of the holiday season offers welcome respite from the cold, dark days. However, health challenges, transportation and distance can make it difficult for some older adults to fully embrace the holiday cheer and connect with loved ones.

For many, a vibrant, supportive community can be the perfect remedy for these seasonal challenges.

At Berwick by the Sea in Campbell River, residents enjoy a lively, close-knit environment where the holiday season is filled with warmth, joy and plenty of opportunities to stay connected. Moving into a private suite within this bustling community gives residents a break from the winter blues, offering a chance to partake in a variety of festive activities designed to bring people together.

“Our event calendar is always filled with exciting activities, but the holidays bring a special energy to Berwick,” shares Loren Butler, Community Relations Manager. “The season is filled with everything from community gatherings to in-house events and special themed activities. It’s a wonderful time for residents to come together and celebrate.”

Earlier in December, Berwick residents joined the Campbell River Big Truck Parade, where their own decorated van shone brightly among the parade’s many dazzling floats. The residence also proudly showcases its beautifully adorned ‘Berwick Tree’ as part of the Campbell River Museum’s renowned Festival of Trees, a tradition that runs through the first week of January.

“Being part of these community events is a highlight, but we also love hosting our own special celebrations right here at Berwick,” Butler says. “Whether it’s an in-house party or a themed activity, these moments bring residents together, allowing them to make new memories and strengthen bonds with one another and with our amazing staff.”

The festive season at Berwick is packed with fun and connection. Residents can enjoy their favourite holiday films in the private cinema, a space that doubles as a hub for trivia games and other social activities. For more relaxed gatherings, the Tyee and Fireside lounges offer cozy settings where residents can participate in seasonal crafts such as a gingerbread house competition, wreath-making and even show off their holiday spirit on Christmas sweater day.

“It’s our mission to ensure every resident feels at home, especially during the holidays,” Butler explains. “Creating a joyful, festive atmosphere at Berwick helps residents stay engaged, uplifted and surrounded by the people who make the season bright.”
