Berwick by the Sea resident Betty Pollard proudly showcases her self-published book, The Misadventure of Delta and Sonny.

The supportive and peaceful environment created by the Berwick by the Sea team provides the perfect space for residents to explore their passions and live life to the fullest. For Betty Pollard, one of Berwick’s residents, it’s been the ideal place to nurture her lifelong love of writing.

In October 2023, Betty published The Misadventure of Delta and Sonny, her first children’s book. What began as a bedtime story for her grandchildren has since blossomed into a heartwarming adventure about two river rats. After her son’s passing following a battle with ALS, Betty decided to donate the net proceeds from the book to ALS research, a way to honour him and support the cause.

“I never would have had the time to focus on writing and promoting the book if it weren’t for the support and peace of mind I’ve found here at Berwick,” Betty says. “Not having to worry about daily chores has given me the space to focus on what I truly love. The encouragement from everyone here has meant so much to me.”

Writing has always been a meaningful way for Betty to connect with her roots, but it was the supportive atmosphere at Berwick that truly gave her the freedom to pursue her creative passions in a deeper way.

Since moving to Berwick, Betty has also contributed several short stories to the Creative Writing group and is currently working on an e-book version of The Misadventure of Delta and Sonny. The Berwick team has been supportive and encouraging, providing Betty with the help she needs to share her work with the community.

“We're so proud of Betty and all that she’s accomplished," says Loren Butler, community relations manager at Berwick by the Sea. "Berwick by the Sea is all about helping our residents thrive and we’re honoured to be a part of Betty’s creative journey.”

To celebrate Betty’s achievement, the Berwick team hosted an intimate book-signing event in the Berwick Library before the holidays. The heartwarming occasion brought residents and staff together to show their support for Betty’s work.

“The support from everyone at Berwick has been incredible,” Betty adds. “It’s so comforting to know that people here are genuinely happy for me and excited to see me succeed.”

Whether it’s writing a book, trying something new, or simply enjoying the company of others, Berwick creates an environment where residents like Betty can find the time and encouragement to nurture their creative passions.
