From a gas station job in 1976 to nearly five decades in the automotive industry—Ken Stillin’s passion and expertise keep customers smiling at Bill Howich Chrysler!

Ken Stillin never expected that a gas station job in 1976 would lead to a nearly five-decade career in the automotive industry. But that’s exactly what happened when he started working for Warren Byrd at a small service station. Now, 49 years later, he runs the Fastlane Oil department at Bill Howich Chrysler, sharing his expertise and a friendly smile with customers every day.

“I was offered an apprenticeship to be an automotive technician,” Stillin recalls. “I jumped on the chance, and in January 1982, I became a Red Seal technician. From that point on, I kept learning and growing.”

Stillin’s career has spanned an incredible evolution in automotive technology. Early in his career, mechanics worked with points, condensers, carburettors and spark plugs. Over time, vehicles became computer-reliant, shifting diagnostics from hands-on tuning to software navigation.

“In the early days, we had a 700-page book to diagnose issues. Now, everything is online, guiding us,” Stillin explains. “Back then, if you had spark, fuel and compression, you could make a car run. Now, computers tell us how it should be.”

With the rise of hybrids and electric vehicles, the industry requires constant adaptation. Even seasoned technicians, he notes, are still learning every day.

A decision to stay

Through ownership changes, new technology and other opportunities Stillin has remained a steady presence at Bill Howich Chrysler.

“I had a chance to go to the oil fields and make big bucks,” he admits. “But I don’t like the cold, and that wasn’t me. I’d rather stay here, help this business grow, and be part of something that matters.”

He credits fair treatment and a strong work environment for keeping him rooted. Five years ago, Stillin transitioned to Fastlane Oil, a change that allowed him to interact more directly with customers.

“I always liked working with the public,” he says. “In the main shop, you don’t deal with people as much. But now, I get to talk with customers, explain things and build relationships. That’s one of my strengths.”

Stillin approaches his work with a positive attitude. “Some days, nothing goes right, and others, everything falls into place. That’s just how it is,” he says with a chuckle.

For young technicians, Stillin offers simple but valuable advice:

  • Show up early and be ready to work.
  • Always be willing to learn – technology is constantly changing.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Leave personal problems at home and come to work happy.

“The people you work with have insights you don’t,” he says. “Take advantage of that. And most importantly, just enjoy what you do.”

Though retirement is on the horizon, Stillin isn’t in a hurry to leave. “As long as I’m happy and able, I’ll keep at it,” he says. For now, he remains a familiar face at Bill Howich Chrysler, ensuring vehicles run smoothly and customers leave satisfied.
