The Campbell River Killer Whales swam in Victoria for the Winter Provincial Championships this month.
The Campbell River Killer Whales swam in Victoria earlier this month for the Winter Provincial Championships.
The team placed 13 overall in the tournament, with the women's team finishing in ninth place out of the 43 teams that attended.
"This is an amazing accomplishment as our local swim team has never cracked the top 20 at a Provincials (tournament) in our club's long history," said coach Richard Millns.
The teams managed to score a lot of points through relays, where they consistently placed in the top eight.
Anisa Nelson, Keyana, Owens, Saskia Scheveres and Sarah Haugen pulled off a miracle to win the bronze medal in the 4X10 Free Relay," said Millns.
The Winter Provincial Championships is an important opportunity for swimmers, offering them a chance to be selected to compete in the Canada Summer Games, which St. John's will host this upcoming August.
The women's B team, consisting of Moriah Scott, Kenzie McArthur, Cassidy Hayduk and Sofia Komljenovic scored some points for the Killer Whales.
The men's relay team, made of Zac Millns, Oliver Vanjecek, Brayden Brown and Kyle Joyce, finished seventh in the 4X50 freestyle relay.
Haugen led the Killer Whales with eight medals, seven bronze and one silver. She also broke two individual club records (200-metre breaststroke and 100-metre backstroke), and four relay club records.
"Sarah's accomplishments as an athlete are impressive, but that pales in comparison to her conduct as a teammate," said Millns. "Sarah Haugen is our most dedicated team member, day in and day out."
Zac Millns won three medals, one gold and two silver. He also broke two individual club records (both in freestyle) and four relay records. Millns is currently on Team BC's list for swimmers for the Canada Summer Games.
Joshua Krestinski, Schevers and Hayduk also broke records.
"The Campbell River Killer Whales is one of the strongest teams in the province. Pound-for-pound, they are one of the strongest teams in the Country. Our local team is sending a record four swimmers to try out for the World Championship Team this summer. Zac Millns, Keyana Owens, Sarah Haugen and Cassidy Hayduk will be racing in Victoria in early June at the World Championship Trials," said Millns. "Many of our athletes are highly recruited for University Teams and have a bright future in both academics and athletics."
