Strathcona Dam and the temporary spillway gate control building work.

BC Hydro says the road across the Strathcona Dam will be closed from Nov. 6 to 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The closure will only be on weekdays. After Nov. 15, the road will return to single-lane alternating traffic across the dam until April 2025 due to construction work. New signage warning drivers of construction will also be updated on the road.

The work continues the early works for the upcoming Strathcona Dam Water Discharge Upgrade Project. BC Hydro is constructing temporary spillway gate control facilities, including a temporary control building, on the top of the earthfill dam. The reason for the eight days of road closure is worker safety. BC Hydro has some upcoming work where the proximity of the traffic would be too close to the work area. It is a narrow road crossing over the dam.

When the road returns to single-lane alternating traffic in April, BC Hydro warns there could be brief closures for up to 30 minutes.

The temporary spillway gate will help BC Hydro provide its general contractor with prepared site conditions, allowing them to start further project construction in 2025.

BC Hydro is planning to have funding approvals and a general contractor in place for project construction to start in summer/fall 2025. The road across the dam will then be closed for about three years.
