An unattended space heater was the probable cause of a late-night fire at a Campbell River dry dock on Tuesday night.

A call came in just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday for a fire at the freshwater marina in Campbell River. A fire was discovered in a 30 foot boat that was in the drydock there. The boat was located 1o feet from the nearest vessel, and nobody was aboard at the time of the fire.

“It is still under investigation,” said acting fire chief Stephanie Bremer. “It is believed to have been caused by space heater. Of course we recommend that space heaters are never left unattended.”

Bremer said the owner of the boat was notified of the incident. She said that he had been working on the boat that night, and had left the space heater running after he left for the day.

“It was another quick response by the fire department. We were able to attack it we were able to put it out and there was no injuries to anybody,” Bremer said. “The call came in just before 10, and units were cleared at 11:30.”

“The use of space heaters is not safe unless it’s being monitored,” she added. “We don’t ever recommend the space heaters be left unattended in any type of room, RV, or boat.”
