Kat Eddy, the chair of the School Board 72 school board, has been elected the president of the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association (VISTA).

"I am deeply honoured to share that this weekend I was elected as the president of the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association. I take on this role with a strong sense of responsibility and a deep sense of gratitude," said Eddy during a school board meeting on April 29. "I would also like to recognize and thank past VISTA president Janice Caton for her incredible 18 years of leadership and service. Her dedication has been instrumental in shaping our collective voice within the provincial education community." Just as a side note, Campbell River will be hosting the fall Vista Conference where I'll get to try on my new president's hat."

VISTA is a branch of the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA). The BCSTA had their AGM from April 24 to 26 in Vancouver. During the AGM, a new president and board of the BCSTA were also elected.

"I want to congratulate Tracy Loffler on her election as president of the BCSTA and extend those congratulations to the newly elected members of the BCSTA board of directors," Eddy said. "Your leadership will play an essential role in advocating for the future of public education in our province."

In her role as president, Eddy will make sure regional priorities across schools on Vancouver Island are succusful, while advocating for students and public education. Eddy will also be working with the BCSTA to make sure Island's schools have a say with education-related topics at a provincial level.

"Looking ahead, I'm committed to working closely with the BCSTA to ensure that Vancouver Island's unique perspectives and priorities are heard and reflected in our provincial advocacy. Together, we will continue to raise the profile of our region and make sure the voices of our Island students, families and communities are represented in the broader conversation about public education in British Columbia," said Eddy.

Eddy was appointed as the chairperson of SD72's school board in 2018, and was reappointed to the position in 2022 and 2024.
