During a public school board meeting on April 29, a day after the federal general election, School District 72 school board's chair offered her congratulations to Aaron Gunn.
Gunn, a member of the Conservative Party of Canada, was elected as the MP for the North Island - Powell River electoral district.
"We are keen for you to use your voice to represent equitable public education for all children in our diverse region," said chair Kat Eddy.
While education is a provincial responsibility, such as developing and implementing policies, funding, and defining curriculum, the federal government provides funding for some school programs, which Eddy pointed out during the meeting.
"As chair, I want to emphasize that well education remains a provincial responsibility, ongoing federal supports for initiatives like the national school food program, policies supporting equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism, as well as economic programs for low-income families is vital," she said.
"These national efforts help elevate all of our province's children and indeed all Canadians, ensuring that we can focus on improving learning outcomes, addressing historical disparities for Indigenous students, advocating for infrastructure improvements, and recruiting educators from across the country to our classrooms."
