Record-breaking crowd celebrates 6th annual Loop Day in Campbell River

Almost 600 participants walk, ride, and connect along the 28-km Greenways Loop

On June 1, a record-breaking crowd of nearly 600 people came together for the 6th annual Loop Day – Campbell River’s celebration of connection, community, and the 28-kilometre Greenways Loop.

Dressed in green and full of local pride, residents and visitors walked, biked, and explored the trail, stopping at four vibrant FROG stations – Forest, River, Ocean, and Greenways – for music, hands-on activities, local stories, and treats (yes, even ice cream!).

“The Greenways Loop sets us apart from other communities,” says Laurel Cronk, one of the event’s founders. “It’s become a true community asset – connecting us to nature, our neighbourhoods, and each other.”

Originally envisioned by Greenways Land Trust in the early 2000s, the Loop was built piece by piece by dedicated community partners with support from the City of Campbell River. Rotary brought the Seawalk to life, Greenways led the Jubilee Connector, and the car-free ERT helped tie it all together. But for years, one link from the hugest to Maryland remained missing.

That changed in 2019, when a volunteer team – now known as the Loop Group – decided to reverse the route and link it through the Maryland subdivision, offering a local and different perspective of Camobell River. With that in place, the Loop partnered with the City to complete and sign the full route. That same year marked the very first Loop Day, with just under 200 participants. Today, the trail is marked by distinctive FROG symbols, created by the late Curtis Wilson, guiding users along the around the loop.

With almost every resident living within 5 km of the trail, the Greenways Loop invites daily adventure – offering an easy, accessible way to stay active, enjoy nature, and discover new parts of the city.
