The construction of the aquatic centre at Strathcona Gardens continues to move forward, despite some snow and low temperatures that temporarily impacted concrete pours in early February, says the SRD.
According to a post on the Strathcona Gardens Facebook on March 16, the construction of the lap pool has begun. Currently, work is underway on the formwork and concrete placement for the footings and walls for the pool. In addition, mechanical and electrical rough-ins and backfilling are also in progress.
In an update to the Strathcona Gardens Commission on Feb. 19, a regional district report outlined how the SRD is partnering with the We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum Nations to commission and manage Indigenous art installations.
"These installations will honour the rich cultural heritage of the Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people while strengthening community connections," notes the report. "This initiative aims to create meaningful and culturally significant artwork that resonates with all visitors, fosters engagement with Indigenous communities, and seamlessly integrates into the facility's architectural and functional design."
The SRD said it is working collaboratively with the Nations to identify artists, coordinate with the construction team, and oversee the installation process. This project has a budget of $150,000, with a goal to complete the design development by September 2025, and the installation by 2026.

The regional district began construction on the REC-REATE project last September. During a ceremony on Sept. 10, Strathcona Gardens Commission Chair, Susan Sinnott, emphasized the importance of the new facility for the community. The ceremony was a testament to the collective efforts of the SRD, community members, and various partners who supported the project's development.
The aquatic centre remains on schedule to be completed by September 2026, with the Wellness Centre scheduled to open in Spring 2027, according to the Feb. 19 update.
