Honouring lost workers: Campbell River declares April 28 Day of Mourning

In 2024, 146 workers in B.C. died from a workplace injury or disease

Campbell River city staff and council members gathered at Frank James Park on April 28 to pay tribute to those who have died from work-related injuries or illnesses.

The City of Campbell River declared April 28, 2025, to be a Day of Mourning to honour the memory of lost workers and to increase public awareness of occupational health and safety.

"The loss of life at work is tragic and preventable, and through observing the Day of Mourning, we honour those who have died and remind our community to renew their commitment to ensure all workers are safe on the job," says the city.

According to the city's proclamation, in 2024, 146 workers in the province died from a workplace injury or disease.

The Day of Mourning was initiated by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984. Canada was the first country to recognize this day, and it is now observed worldwide.

The city is encouraging everyone to take a moment to reflect on how "we all can contribute to creating safe and healthy workplaces."
