To celebrate World Rivers Day, the Museum at Campbell River is holding its annual Haig-Brown Festival on Sept. 22.
This community event pays tribute to the lasting impact of Roderick Haig-Brown and Ann Elmore, whose remarkable contributions span environmental conservation, literature, community service and fishing.
The festival aims to enrich the public's understanding of and engagement with these themes, fostering a deeper connection to the community through new knowledge and immersive experiences.
For almost 20 years, the festival has been a platform for the Stewardship Awards, recognizing outstanding environmental contributions to Campbell River.
This year, the public is encouraged to submit nominations to Greenways Land Trust until Sept. 16, with the awards ceremony taking place during the festival. These nominations can be accessed through Greenways Land Trust and the Museum at Campbell River, both organizers of the event.
The festival also features a range of engaging activities. Visitors can practice fly-casting, immerse themselves in readings from Roderick Haig-Brown’s conservation works, and shop in an artisan market of locally crafted goods.
The Haig-Brown property offers a picturesque setting where numerous community groups will engage with visitors. Highlights include a guided plant walk with herbalist Anita Murdoch, textile demonstrations by Midnight Shuttles, an art station hosted by Crow’s Nest Artist Collective, fish printing with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and wildlife interactions courtesy of MARS with an ambassador bird. Additionally, Greenways Land Trust will showcase their initiatives, alongside Wild Wise, Campbell River and North Island Transition Society, and Quadra Island Salmon Enhancement Society.
Live music by the Awakeneers will add to the atmosphere, and the Campbell River Arts Council will facilitate open-air painting sessions across the grounds and feature works by Shawn Decaire, the Walter Morgan Artist in Residence.
The Haig-Brown Festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2250 Campbell River Road. Admission to the festival is free.
