In keeping with tradition, the mayor of Campbell River was presented the First Poppy from the Royal Canadian Legion this week.

Mayor Kermit Dahl received the honour from Alain Chatigny CD, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 137's president and service officer, on Wednesday (Oct. 23) morning.

Running from the last Friday of October until Nov. 11 each year, the Legion's Poppy Campaign raises money to support veterans and their families.

The funds raised locally stay in Campbell River to support veterans who live in the city, Chatigny said. Last year, the local Legion raised about $34,000 through the campaign.

The Poppy Fund supports many veteran programs, such as local Cadet Corps and bursaries.
