A bylaw to include more properties in the Downtown Campbell River Business Improvement Area passed first, second, and third readings during a special council meeting on May 6.
The Downtown Campbell River Business Improvement Area Bylaw No. 3985, 2025 was proposed by the Downtown Campbell River Business Improvement Association to amend and expand the business improvement area to include the properties on 11th Avenue, from Cedar Street to Dogwood Street.
During the meeting on May 6, Alaina Maher, the chief financial officer with the City of Campbell River, said that because the twelve responses against the bylaw do not meet the required threshold for the petition to defeat the proposal, staff recommended the bylaw be given first, second, and third readings.
The Downtown BIA’s budget for 2025, totalling $103,430.00, with a three per cent annual increase, was also approved. Property owners of Class 5 and Class 6 within the area must pay a local service tax of approximately $2.09111 per $1,000 of the assessed value of the improvements (buildings) on their properties.
BIA Executive Director Jan Wade said the BIA plans to use a beautification grant to "spruce up" the street by adding flower pots and garbage bins. She also mentioned that a new Vietnamese restaurant will be opening on 11th Avenue, and there are plans underway for some of the vacant buildings.
