The 2024 summer season is getting underway for the Museum at Campbell River and fun and learning about local history is in store.
This year’s summer fun is being hosted by Heritage Interpreters Kate Schulz, Ash Sutherland, Judy Charlie, and Mar Vajello. They will be leading historical puppet shows, special events, and exciting kids summer camps.
The museum’s famous historical puppet theatre is perfect for teaching children the history of northern Vancouver Island in hilarious and engaging ways. Each performance lasts around 20 minutes and to keep the fun going, are followed with a craft. They start Tuesday July 2 and will run Tuesdays and Thursdays until August 29. Show times are 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person aged 3 and up and children aged 2 and under are free. The plays are geared towards children aged 3 to 6 years but are great fun for the whole family. Kids are encouraged to enter a prize draw at every show for a chance to win their very own puppet from the Museum’s Gift Shop so enter often. The final draw will be pulled at the last performance.
The museum is hosting two special events for kids this summer. Kids Day, on Wednesday July 17, is a free family event held at the Museum filled with puppet shows and multiple hands-on activity stations both inside and outside the museum. Then on Wednesday August 14, the Teddy Bear Picnic at Haig-Brown House is a great opportunity to enjoy lawn games, music, a story walk, and more at a beautiful heritage site. Kids are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal and families can bring a lunch to enjoy on the beautiful grounds of the Haig-Brown House.
On top of Puppet Theatre and special events, the museum will be offering two summer camps for kids aged 7-11, beginning July 29. Check the website for details on those.
Summer programs at the museum are funded in part by Young Canada Works and the government of Canada.
