Members of the mid-Island branch of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry regiment present Yucalta Lodge with a 100th anniversary commemorative bench Tuesday morning with Mayor Walter Jakeway (second from left) in attendance.

Yucalta Lodge was presented last week with a specially carved Cedar bench.

The bench is fitted with a plaque that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. It’s one of 10 park benches to be donated to senior citizens homes across the Island. The bench was hand-made by Princess Patricia association member Fred Raven of Port Alberni and presented to Yucalta Lodge May 13 for residents and staff to enjoy.

The Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry turns 100 years-old on August 10, 2014 and the bench is a gift to mark the milestone. The regiment was formed by Brigadier General Andrew Hamilton Gault as the last privately raised regiment in the British Empire.

The Patricia’s – named after the Governor General’s daughter – served in both World Wars, and the Korean War. The regiment has also served in Canada and Germany and has been involved in several peace keeping tours worldwide.
