The Strathcona Food Security Project has now released its draft reports for public comment.

This joint initiative between North Island College and Island Health details the results of the research undertaken in the fall of 2013 on food security in the Strathcona Region.

Food security is when everyone has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their food preferences, and is produced sustainably.

“The Project visited many Strathcona communities to listen to what people had to say about their food security, and now we’re checking in to make sure that we’ve got it right,” says Cynthia Bendickson, project coordinator. “We definitely have some challenges, including limited access to local farm products and many people struggling to afford healthy food, but it was great to hear about how much gardening, fishing and hunting is happening in Strathcona and how it seems to be on the increase.”

The draft reports include a Food Security Needs Assessment, a Food Security Networking Hub Feasibility Assessment, and a Food Security Action Plan Framework.  They are available to access on the Project blog at www.strathconafoodsecurity.wordpress.com and comments are open until June 8, 2014.  A series of open houses will be held to provide an opportunity to discuss any questions and specific feedback with Project staff.   Open houses will take place in the following communities:

  • Kyuquot and Zeballos, May 12 & 13.

  • Tahsis and Gold River, May 24.

  • Campbell River, May 28.

  • Sayward, May 29.

  • Cortes Island and Quadra Island, May 31.
