What worried Jody Hagel, Campbell River Auxiliary Fire recruit, the most about the application process was the physical testing.
“The more I was asking people about it, I wasn’t getting a whole lot of responses from women, that women had done it…that made me even more determined to do it,” she said.
At this point in her life, with a stable job and no kids, she said she is confident she will be able to respond when needed. She said she is also in the best shape of her life right now.
“Why not? I really have nothing to lose,” she remembers thinking.
Hagel said she doesn’t really know why there aren’t more women on the department and auxiliary in Campbell River, she speculated that people might think it is a ‘man’s job’.
“But it’s really not… If you want to do it just do it.”
