Brazilian martial arts have found a new home in Campbell River.

Simeo Diaz of Axe Capoeira will teach an introductory course for children starting Jan 15.

Capoeira is a martial art developed in the 1700s by African and Native slaves in Brazil. Considered a beautiful and rhythmic art form, Capoeira involves self defense, music, song, acrobatics and strategic play. Training in the discipline of Capoeira builds strength, rhythm, balance, discipline, coordination as well as knowledge of the traditional music, language and culture it encompasses.

Interest in Capoeira has been on the rise on the North Island. Classes have become established in Courtenay and Comox and now Axe Capoeira hopes Campbell River will prove to be another popular location.

Axé Capoeira is an internationally-established group with more than 20 years teaching in Canada. Instructors Alicia Fennel and Simeo Diaz have played a major role in this popularity as they provide a friendly and encouraging atmosphere for students to learn and develop skills.

“It is amazing to watch the children gain confidence and skill as they practice and learn,” says Diaz.

Kid’s Intro to Capoeira is for children aged 7 to13 on takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Jan. 15 ending Mar. 14. Each class will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Register at either the Campbell River Community Centre or the Sportsplex.
