The stretch of coast, from the Discovery Islands to the Broughton Archipelago, has some of the finest scenery in the world, but much of it is only accessible by boat.
The Museum at Campbell River, in partnership with Mothership Adventures, will take a lucky few to see these places in May and June.
They have two multi-day cruises on offer, aboard the historic Columbia III. The 68-foot boat will follow circuitous routes through the islands and up several inlets, with stops on route to explore heritage sites. A historian will be on hand to share stories of the many colourful people who have pitted themselves against a demanding – and beautiful – coastline.
The first of these tours winds through the southern part of the Discovery Islands and up Bute Inlet, which has some of the highest mountains in the province and a dramatic past. The marine parks of Desolation Sound, the Octopus Islands and the Marina Island bird sanctuary are just a few of the other highlights.
The second trip runs from Campbell River to the Broughton Islands and up Kingcome Inlet for a look at ancient Kwakwaka’wakw village sites, one of which has the last crumbling remains of a traditional big house and totem pole. Here too, participants can expect unparalleled mountain scenery, waterfalls, islands galore and diverse wildlife.
