Dear editor,
As Mark Carney steps forward, his leadership must include a commitment to reversing the misguided decision to close salmon farms in B.C. Sustainable aquaculture is critical for Canada and British Columbia’s food security, economic stability, and strong Indigenous partnerships.
B.C.’s salmon farming sector supports thousands of jobs, fosters innovation, and offers real opportunities for youth in coastal communities. It is a key player in Canada’s climate-smart food strategy – providing a low-carbon protein source while advancing reconciliation through direct partnerships with First Nations.
Carney’s vision for economic growth and sustainability must embrace this industry, ensuring science-based policy decisions that protect both the environment and livelihoods. The science is clear – responsible salmon farming can coexist with wild stocks and support a sustainable blue economy. The opportunity is here, and rural coastal communities are calling for leadership. Carney must step up. We’re all watching.
