The Tidemark Theatre announces the opening of "Wild Encounters: Portraits from the West Coast," featuring the artwork of Comox Valley artist Sarah Bergeron.
This captivating exhibit will be on display in the theatre’s lobby gallery throughout January and February, available for viewing Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
"Wild Encounters" showcases a beautiful series of oil paintings and giclee prints that celebrate the diverse wildlife of British Columbia’s West Coast, with a particular focus on the stunning landscapes of Vancouver Island. Bergeron’s work invites audiences into a rich interplay between art and nature, featuring various animals, including whales, bears, cougars, eagles, wolves, and ravens, each portrayed with striking detail and emotional depth.
The collection captures the essence of these majestic creatures, evoking the awe and wonder of encountering them in their natural habitats. Some pieces radiate vibrant colours, celebrating the joy these animals bring, while others adopt a more sombre tone, reflecting the untamed spirit of the natural world.
In addition to her main series, Bergeron presents five intricate drawings on Stonehenge paper that address critical issues affecting marine ecosystems, such as pollution and climate change. Through these thought-provoking pieces, she underscores the fragility of coastal environments and encourages viewers to reflect on their relationship with nature and their role in its preservation.
Having grown up on Vancouver Island, Bergeron’s profound connection to the land and its wildlife is evident in her art. A graduate of Emily Carr University of Art & Design, she actively contributes to the Comox Valley arts community as both an artist and curator. Her passion for the environment resonates deeply with audiences across the island.
