Rehearsing a scene in Rivercity Players next production Knickers! A Brief Comedy, are (from left) Michelle McColm, Barb Baldwin and Deirdre Hartwell. The comedy will run Feb. 27 to March 1 and March 6-8 at the Rivercity Stage, 1080 Hemlock St. Tickets available at rivercitytickets.ca.

The small town of Elliston Falls has suffered a huge economic loss with the mill shutting down, but the local Weight Watchers group is coming to the rescue!

Rivercity Players is excited to bring Knickers! A Brief Comedy to Campbell River.

In the play, Kelli Colley takes the part of Terri, who runs the local Weight Watchers. Joining her at these meetings are Mary (Michelle McColm) and Barb (Lynne Macara). These saucy friends have spent their lives in Elliston Falls, as have their husbands and losing their local mill has been a devastating blow.

Tourism officer Amanda (played by Kelly Senko) arrives on the scene to help develop ideas to bolster the local economy.  Between them, they hatch a plan to start up a custom underwear business, put everyone to work and save their town.

Also in the cast are Barb Baldwin and Deirdre Hartwell, who portray a colorful collection of Elliston Falls citizens.

This irreverent comedy explores their friendships and struggles, and their determination to turn things around.

Knickers! was written by Sarah Quick, who was born in England but now lives in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Quick is also an actor, and played Amanda in the Globus Theatre production of Knickers!.

Susan Wydenes is directing the play, which she feels is about “leaning on each other in hard times, to find the strength and resilience to get through it.”

“I enjoy stories about the love that friends have for each other,” she said, “and how that love fortifies us and carries us along, both in good times and rough patches. This play revolves around that theme.”

“A clever and cheeky tale! Underlying the laughs is a very touching human story of small town values and resiliency.”  — Simcoe Reformer

Knickers! will be performed Feb. 27 to March 1 and March 6 to 8 starting at 7:30 p.m., and March 2 and 8 starting at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Rivercity Stage, 1080 Hemlock. Tickets can be purchased at rivercitytickets.ca.
