Looking for a fun way for kids to learn and be more engaged this summer? The Museum at Campbell River is excited to offer historical puppet shows, free family events, and children’s summer camps this July and August.
The Museum’s 2025 Heritage Interpreter team of Elizabeth Bettenson, Cydnie Safruik, and Ava Simard will be leading the kids’ programming this summer at the Museum. The Interpreter team has planned a summer that offers a way to keep kids entertained throughout July and August while also teaching them about the community they live in and getting them excited about our collective history on Northern Vancouver Island.
The Museum’s famous historical Puppet Theatre has been teaching local history to kids for over thirty years in a fun and engaging way. Puppet Shows will begin for the summer on Thursday, July 3 and will be held at the Museum every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm throughout July and August. Entry to the puppet shows is $3 for those aged 3 or older, or a puppet passport with 10 entry passes can be purchased for $25.
Performances last approximately 20 minutes and are followed by a fun craft for kids to bring home. Kids can enter a prize draw at every show for a chance to win their very own Chatty the Frog puppet from the Museum’s gift shop. The draw will be made at the last show of the summer on August 28. The puppet shows are best suited for children aged 3 to 6 years old but are sure to bring laughs to people of all ages.
The Museum’s heritage interpreters will also be hosting two exciting special events for kids this summer. Kids Day at the Museum on July 23 will be filled with fun activities, puppet shows and adventures for families to enjoy together. This free event will run from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On August 27 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Museum is thrilled to be hosting the annual Teddy Bear Picnic once again on the grounds of the Haig-Brown House, located at 2250 Campbell River Road. Children can bring along their treasured stuffed animals for an afternoon of lawn games, music, puppet shows and more. Families are encouraged to bring lunch to enjoy on the lawn of the Haig-Brown House.
"From our popular historical puppet theatre to our wonderful family friendly events, the Museum at Campbell River's summer programs are all set to share Northern Vancouver Island's incredible history with the next generation,” says Ellie McKown, the Museum’s Education Manager. This summer is sure to bring back memories that last a lifetime for people of all ages.
Summer Programs at the museum are funded in part by Young Canada Works and the government of Canada.
