The duo behind the Gumboot series will be on Quadra Island on Oct. 1 to launch the newest book in the series, Gumboots in the Straits.
Lou Allison and Jane Wilde are the brains behind the series, releasing Gumboot Girls, Dancing in Gumboots, and Gumboot Guys through Caitlin Press. The series romanticizes the 1970s when young people set out for adventures on British Columbia's rugged coastline.
Compiled by Wilde and edited by Allison, Gumboots in the Straits focuses on those young people adventuring Vancouver Island and the other islands scattered around the Salish Sea, which includes the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound, and all of the connecting channels and adjoining waterways.
"As many young adventurers made their way to Vancouver Island and the many other islands scattered throughout the Salish Sea and beyond in search of opportunity and new experiences, they discovered paths beyond the reach of roads and new horizons, both physical and metaphorical, where all seemed possible," reads a press release on the anthology. "Through stories of resilience, self-discovery, and the ever-present romance of the sea, Gumboots in the Straits offers a deeply nostalgic look at the Pacific Northwest’s counterculture movement."
The book launch will be at Heriot Bay Inn from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a dance that starts at 7 p.m.
