The Young Professionals of Campbell River (YPCR) chose John Howard KidStart as one of the recipients of its fundraising gala this year.

The group will donate $2,400 to help make a difference in the lives of young people who are facing challenges.

“When everyone at YPCR heard that KidStart is Campbell River’s only one-to-one mentoring program, we immediately knew it was the right choice. With 90 kids on the waitlist and no core government funding, this is a local program we wanted to give back to and help raise awareness about,” said Deanna Collins, YPCR Communications Director.

KidStart is operated by The John Howard Society of North Island. This volunteer-based program connects caring adults with children and youth (ages 6-18) for three hours of fun recreational activities per week. Through this donation, YPCR has become a sponsor for two children in the program – a 9-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy.

To become a John Howard KidStart Champion, donors choose from three levels of monthly sponsorship (Gold = $100/month, Silver = $50, Bronze = $25). Champions receive a profile of the child they are sponsoring (names are changed to protect privacy), annual updates, a Champion decal, and a tax receipt.

KidStart also greatly appreciates admission passes and gift certificates from local businesses for mentor-mentee outings. More time than money? Consider volunteering as a KidStart mentor.
