Noon Hour Rotary Club president-elect Patricia Gagnon (left), Mayor Charlie Cornfield (centre) and Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club president Craig Gillis raised the Rotary flag on Wednesday at City Hall after the mayor proclaimed Feb. 23 as End Polio Now Day. On Rotary's 106th birthday, they are celebrating the worldwide organizations efforts to virtually eliminate polio. Twenty-five years ago,  more than 350,000 children were stricken with polio every year and nearly 1,000 people were affected by the crippling disease. Since then polio cases have been reduced by 99 per cent to fewer than 1,700 cases in 2009.
