Quinsam Coal has cut a cheque for $4,000 to enhance the good works of the Campbell River Salmon Foundation.
Quinsam’s director of environment and sustainability Darren Cowan said the donation recognizes that “we are supportive of the foundation’s initiatives and its community-based focus. That is what Quinsam is all about. These folks work in our watersheds and we work in our watersheds so it’s nice to see a positive contribution on both sides.”
Foundation director Mike Gage said: “We’re excited because our fundraising has been most successful with the resource industries.”
Gage said some of the funds will be dedicated to the first year of a Coho inoculation program in partnership with the Quinsam Hatchery and the Aquatic Health Science Centre. The hatchery has proposed a testing program to determine whether inoculating Coho against vibriosis will increase the survival rate of tagged smolt when they are released into the marine environment. Vibriosis is a common bacterial disease that occurs naturally in the marine environment.
