Campbell Riverites gathered at the city's foreshore Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2024, to witness the last flight of the legendary Martin Mars water bomber.
The iconic red-and-white Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber, set to be displayed at the B.C. Aviation Museum (BCAM), was making its final flight to North Saanich on Sunday, Aug. 11. The Martin Mars was the largest water bomber of its kind, with a wingspan of 200 feet and the capability to drop more than 25,000 litres of water per run during its firefighting days.
Many people, cellphones in hand, positioned themselves on Campbell River's long waterfront to see the iconic airplane and to say goodbye and thanks for all its heroic service fighting fires in the province. The plane flew over a number of Vancouver Island communities on Sunday on it's way to the BCAM.
