The Campbell River Fraternal Order of Eagles Club recently celebrated its 60th anniversary of people helping people in our community.

The anniversary was commemorated by giving away more than $12,000 to various local organizations including the Food Bank, Search and Rescue, Firefighters Burn Camp, Ann Elmore House, Men’s 2nd Chance, Radiant Life, Meals on Wheels, the Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, Women’s Centre and the RCMP Dare Program.

In the past year alone the Campbell River Eagles have donated more than $90,000 to various charities from money they’ve raised volunteering to do catering and many other fundraisers.

“It feels great to be a part of this wonderful group of people,” said Marlene Jordan, Ladies’ Auxiliary President. “Watching our efforts pay off and being able to help groups and individuals less fortunate every month is so rewarding.”

Since becoming a chartered club in 1951, the Eagles’ accomplishments included being the first organization to start bingo in Campbell River, putting on a free annual seniors lunch (typically attended by 275 or more 70-plus-year -olds) for the past 54 years, hosting Halloween parties and other annual events for people with special needs and hosting the annual Friendship Bazaar for the past 30 years.

In recent years the club has also directed its time and resources to help out School District 72 by supporting the lunch programs at Cedar, Ripple Rock and Pinecrest Elementary Schools, and organizing annual gingerbread decorating events which have benefitted hundreds of children.

“It’s amazing what a small, committed group of caring people can accomplish when their hearts are in the right place,” said Maureena Wilson, Ladies Auxiliary Secretary.
