Local mines have a part in TV miniseries

Mining Your Future showcases 24 diverse careers and offers an inside look at this modern-day industry

The first ever reality TV mini-series about careers in B.C.’s mining industry continues this Saturday at 11:30  a.m. and 2 p.m. across British Columbia.

Mining Your Future showcases 24 diverse careers and offers an inside look at this modern-day industry that provides over 10,000 employees in communities across the province.

The series was filmed with the support of companies in mining operations and development – including Campbell River’s Myra Falls operation – the B.C. government, the Mining Association of B.C., Association for Mineral Exploration BC and the BC HR Task Force: Mineral Exploration, Mining, Stone, Sand & Gravel. There are over 120 careers in the industry; the 24 selected to appear in this year’s shows are only the tip of the iceberg.

“The Mining Your Future TV mini-series provides a unique opportunity for British Columbians from the comfort of their own couch, to discover the industry that has some of the province’s highest paying jobs,” says Campbell River’s Dave Bazowski, representing the BC Mining HR Task Force.

The show will air every Saturday until Oct. 27. on KVOS at 11:30 and CHEK at 2 p.m.

Each episode will showcase three different careers, a Fact Digging segment by BCIT that reveals a fun fact about the industry and a Mining Gives Back segment by Goldcorp that depicts the heart of the industry in B.C.

“The BC Mining HR Task Force fundamentally supported this pilot miniseries because B.C. is hitting a critical labour shortage with the aging demographic – 40 per cent of our industry is 50 years plus,: Bazowski says. “Additionally, our industry will need over 10,000 new recruits by 2021. It is important that British Columbians are provided the opportunity to explore the many career opportunities our industry provides throughout B.C.”
